Arachne2-Fabula2

Excerpt from the published article 'Notes about Variations', by: F. A. Rodríguez- 'This story comes from Greek Mythology. The legend tells that a young greek woman named Arachne, was always boasting that she could weave faster than Palas Athena- Greek Goddess of wisdon, the arts, sciencia and industry-. Athena disguised herself as an old lady, and when Arachne started bragging again, she took her disguise off and challenged the young woman to a weaving contest. The sorrowful Arachne lost the contest. Arachne was turned into an spider. The composition of the painting is made of two episodes. In the rear is the alcove, where Athena had taken her old clothes off and appeared in helmet and suit of armour. The foreground presents the contest in progress. Athena to the left is presented again dressed as an old lady. To the right Arachne weaves as fast as possible, while another young woman brings more wool. Other figures watch the competition. It is my believe that Athena's wheel gives the composition movement. The Weavers or The Fable of Arachne is one of my favorite Diego Velázquez Rodríguez paintings. It was painted in 1644-48'.

La leyenda narra que una joven griega llamada Aracne, se jactó con unas amigas de que ella podía tejer más rápido que Palas Atenas -diosa griega de la sabiduría, de las artes, de las ciencias y de la industria-. Atenas se vistió como una anciana, y cuando Aracne repitió su jactancia, la diosa se despojó de su disfraz y retó a la joven a una contienda. La desdichada Aracne no pudo llevar a cabo su propósito, y perdió. Aracne fue convertida en araña. La pintura está compuesta de dos episodios. En la composición de la alcoba, Atenas se quitó sus indumentarias de vieja, y se presento con su armadura y casco. En primer plano presenta la contienda entre ellas en progreso. Atenas a la izquierda se presenta otra vez vestida como una anciana. A la derecha Aracne teje lo más rapido posible, mientras otra joven le trae más lana; otras figuras observan la competencia. A mi entender la rueca de Atenas le da mucho movimiento a la composición. La Hilanderas, es una de mis pituras favoritas de Diego Velázquez Rodríguez. "Las Hilanderas" fue pintada entre 1644-48".

From the above photograph, four of our friends have died, and we dedicated this presentation to all. They are Humberto Soto-Ricart, Silvano Lora, Félix Brito (childhood friend), and profesor Antonio Rodríguez, from the national school of fine arts. In the background in progress the mural 'Love Dance', commissioned by The Culture Workshop.

De la foto anterior, cuatro de nuestros amigos han fallecido, y a ellos dedicamos esta presentación. Ellos son: Humberto Soto-Ricart, Silvano Lora, Félix Brito (amigo de infancia) y el profesor Antonio Rodríguez de la escuela nacional de bellas artes. Detras, en progreso el mural 'La Danza del Amor', comisionado por el Taller de la Cultura.
